 Memphis, Tennessee: August 16, 1977. Dusty, hot, depressed—a town “all shook up” by the abrupt passing of its resident hip-swiveling singing sensation, Elvis Presley. Just as The King departed, an African-American child entered the world. The child symbolized abandonment for its bereaved mother, who found life unbearable without her beloved Elvis. She lost her will to live that very day, but not before endowing her baby with a name she hoped would prove a legacy of fame and fortune: Elrus.
