MERYL ROMER RETURNS TO THE METROPOLITAN ROOM IN “DREAMING OUT LOUD” A SEARCHING LOOK AT THE IMPACT OF SUBSTANCES THROUGH JAZZ MAY 21 & 22 The Colorado-based jazz singer Meryl Romer heads back east to the Metropolitan Room, 34 West 22nd Street, for two nights only in May. In her fourth appearance at the club, Romer premieres “Dreaming Out Loud,” a new collection of jazz standards about being under the influence of one thing or another, on Saturday May 21 and Sunday May 22, both at 7pm. Romer, whom Jazz Times’ Susan Frances has called “an artist whose expressive style of singing was made for live shows,” leads a New York-based trio featuring Michael Kanan on piano, Jonti Siman on bass and Matt Vorzimer on drums. Performing songs as varied as “Old Devil Moon,” “You’re Getting to Be a Habit with Me,” “Lilac Wine” and “Round Midnight,” Romer probes the pleasures and pitfalls of intoxication and sensory awareness. Her unique perspective, gleaned from having worked with people struggling with addiction, confronts the paradoxes of a jazz ethos that prizes experiencing life to the fullest, often with diminishing returns. Romer, who counsels adults in court-mandated programs, began singing professionally in middle life in 2004, after taking a vocal performance workshop. A native of Brooklyn, Romer trained in dance movement therapy, earning a Master’s Degree from Naropa University in 1993, after moving to Colorado with her husband. She headlines regularly at clubs in Boulder (The Hotel Boulderado) and Denver (Dazzle Jazz and the Supper Club) and she has also performed at The Iridium in New York. Her debut CD, “So Sure,” was a Top Ten critics’ pick in Jazz Times in 2009. “’Dreaming Out Loud’ is a jazz journey,” says Romer, “beginning with heady intoxication and ending in finding one’s voice.”
